Hereafter
Exhibition Opening times: 12pm to 6pm
Closed on Monday, 30 Nov 2020
The lingering sense of the inescapable end is perhaps the most basic of human fears. For millennia, civilizations and cultures around the globe have performed various rituals and traditions, and produced art seeking to make sense of death as part of the full circle of life.
In 2020, the world faces a pandemic that is unprecedented in modern history. The advanced, ubiquitous state of information technology has helped to form a global sense of crisis and community. Nevertheless, as hospitals everywhere are overwhelmed with incoming patients and a cure has yet to be found, death becomes a daily statistic rather than a spiritual, mystical fate.
Seven Singaporean artists from diverse cultural backgrounds take part in ‘Hereafter’, an exhibition which explores perspectives towards death and the afterlife to understand how age-old wisdoms and diverse traditional cultures can help us navigate our current way of life. Curated by two Indonesian curators, the exhibition features artworks that range from painting, photography, and installation to animated video, performance and internet art.

Hereafter is a part of
A platform dedicated to a testing environment for the arts. They embody the spirit of the Substation where it is a Space to Experiment, Fail, Learn and Try Again. Artistic play and experimentation are essential to growing a healthy arts ecosystem.
Through sandbox, we provide spaces for a range of artistic projects (exhibitions, labs & jams) to take place. We encourage self-organising, collaborative processes and active engagement between art and audience.
