B.A.C.A.
10 and 11 October 2020
4pm–9pm
The Substation SAD Bar
Free admission

Baca (“read or to read” in Bahasa) is a social gathering based on the idea of reading and sharing of both independent literature and general attainment of knowledge. With a self-educated consciousness in a “for the streets by the streets” nature, our resident punk artist Shaiful Risan leads us through a series of books, zines, periodicals and other independent publications across generations and countries from the ‘90s to present day. These publications are often a symbol of “attitude and character”, overriding and resisting “decorative aesthetics'', just like how punk zines came to the forefront as a way to publicise underground shows that were being sidelined by established music press outlets in the past.

Other than Shaiful's sharing, hear from three other literary enthusiasts: Khairul Jafni (creator of an online and physical zine showcase platform AFTER), Michael Chua (author of Maid In Singapore) and Steve Lodge (author of The Hall of the Shepherd's Pie).

Attendees are also invited to create their own zine during the session. Materials including a typewriter, copier and zine-making materials (plain paper, scrap paper, stationery, etc) will be available throughout the session.

Independent authors and zine makers are also invited to showcase their works at the SAD Bar for public browsing alongside the workshop. Available spaces include postcard racks and tables.

‘B.A.C.A.’ is presented as part of ‘Proposals for Novel Ways of Being’.
