Two subjects of the documentary I Love Malaya , Xueying and Ziyi, will be attending the screening of the documentary on Wednesday 7 March. Xueying was the feisty old lady with a sharp tongue who persevered in going home despite being kept away for 50 years. Ziyi was the former soldier with a healthy appetite for elephant meat. It will be their first time in Singapore and first time watching the screening with an audience.

ABOUT ANDREA RICHARDS

Award-winning American filmmaker Ms Andrea Richards will be in Singapore to give talks honouring female filmmakers. She is the author of the 2005 acclaimed book, "Girl Director: A How-to Guide for the First Time, Flat-broke Film and Video Maker". An MFA graduate of the California Institute of the Arts, Andrea has written for publications such as LA Weekly, and made short films that have screened at international festivals including OutFest/LA Freewaves and Ladyfest. She produced music videos for clients like DreamWorks, and lectured at the Walker Art Center, the Atlantic Film Festival and LA's American Cinematheque. Andrea lives in Los Angeles.

A stylized documentary on the routine of people living and working on a disposal site in Cambodia. Screened at Kyoto International Student Film & Video Festival Japan and Pisek International Student Film Festival Czech Republic.

Christina is furthering her studies in New Media currently and shares her experiences regularly with foreign press and youth in Singapore. Her passion is in documentaries and she hopes to make her first feature-length documentary soon.

2) Colour Wash & Spin / Singapore / 2006 / 30min / Anna Christin Mallon / Various
Featuring Singaporeans and residents in Singapore, this film is structured around questions that deal with cultural identity and the difficulties of finding it in a new and hybrid globe.

Anna Christin Mallon is an independent filmmaker, a German citizen who grew up in Belgium and is now married to a Singaporean. After setting up a Film department for the SAE Brussels and managed her own production company CitrusTV, she has worked for many other productions in Europe and Singapore.

3) The Old House / Malaysia / 2005 / 8min / Ang Yee Sien / Chinese
After the filmmaker's grandmother passed away, she knew the family house might be abolished. A sentimental document of an old house where her Malaysian ancestors lived.

Yee Sien is trained in creative multimedia and has made several documentaries and short films like "Mother's Day Cake" and "Malaysia Day". She won the Director's Gold Award for "Tasting the Popsicle Once Again" short film in 2005, and an honorable mention at the Tokyo Video Festival 2006.

4) Love First / Denmark / 2006 / 26min / Martin Khoier / Arabic
In between the expectations of marriage and each other, an Arab mountaineer and his American wife try to find their way to overcome the odds.

Martin is a student at The National Film School of Denmark.

1) Seletar Airbase: Singapore's Secret Garden / Singapore / 2006 / 12min / Li Xiuqi / English & Mandarin
Green, colonial, lovely and home to a close community, Seletar Airbase is one of the last few pieces of Singapore that still survives intact. This film captures the beauty of this neighbourhood before being turned into an aerospace industrial park.

Xiuqi has a Masters in Architecture and is self-employed, providing services in photography, design, journalism, and music. This is her first film.

2) Tudung / Malaysia / 2005 / 3min / Liew Seng Tat and Zan Azlee / Malay
What is the purpose of a tudung? Is it to keep things fresh and clean?

Seng Tat is an award-winning short film director who has 3 short films invited to screen at the 2007 Rotterdam International Film Festival. He is currently working on his first feature film. Zan is the principal of Fat Bidin Media, providing services in directing, producing, etc. He has been involved with several television productions for clients in Malaysia.

3) Traces / Finland / 2006 / 32min / Mauri Pasanen / English
The Jewish community of Ciechocinek, Poland, was entirely annihilated in the Holocaust. Two generations later, one person sets out on a quest to re-establish a family connection broken by the Holocaust and the Iron Curtain.

Mauri studied languages, literature and film theory universities in Turku (Finland) and Paris (France). He holds a Master of Arts degree. He lives in Belgium. Traces is his first independent documentary short.

4) Township Jive / Belgium / 2006 / 56min / Bran De Rijcker / Various
A tribute to the musical and cultural diversity of South Africa, and shows how the music made a difference in the years of Apartheid, and how it has evolved since its abolition.

Bram was trained as director/producer at the Brussels film school and the European Film College in Denmark. He scripted his first feature movie on a VAF-Scholarship, the Flemish Audiovisual Fund.

1) The NU Struggle / Nepal / 2007 / 27min / Kshitiz Adhiraj / Nepali
The 2006 April revolution was a historic leap for a socially, economically and politically devastated Nepal. This video centers on a small university town where the people fight to ensure their voices are heard and make a difference. This is the world premiere of The NU Struggle

Kshitiz is a young film student who has made several documentaries pertaining to Nepal, and won the youth talent award from the Government of Nepal. He is also a youth entrepreneur working with the Prayas Youth Group.

2) Paradise Bus / Malaysia / 2006 / 30min / Chi Too / English & Pidgin
When Sep Galeva successful led his community in Lake Murray, Pa Pua New Guinea to stop an illegal logging operation, they wanted to do something with the resource they have: they set up their own eco-forestry programme. Participated in Freedom Film Festival 2006, KL Malaysia

Chi Too makes films for fun, love and activism. Besides making several films, he photographs, paints, draws, writes, and hug trees.

3) I Love Malaya / Singapore / 2006 / 46min / Chan Kah Mei, Ho Choon Hiong, Chris Len, Eunice Lau, Wang Eng Eng / Various
A search for Chin Peng, former leader of the Malayan Communist Party, by five Singaporeans became a collection of stories told by a group of forgotten soldiers - a people who had once given their lives for the land they called Malaya.   

Choon Hiong is an independent filmmaker whose documentary "Innocent" won the Special Jury Prize and Special Achievement Award at the Singapore International Film Festival 2004. His other works have been showncased in London and Japan. Eng Eng is a producer with a local TV station and was formerly a news reporter with a Taiwan TV station. Formerly a broadcast journalist at Mediacorp Radio, Kah Mei covered regional politics of Southeast Asia. Eunice has been a journalist for several years and is now working on a documentary on the Khmer Rouge. Chris does security research at Uppsala University in Sweden

Winner of the Jeonju International Film Festival 2006 Audience Critics Award (Korean Cinema on the Move), this is a self-reflexive and light-hearted documentary on the film crew and their lives as women living in family-centric South Korea.

Director Kyungsoon started her career as a documentary maker relatively late, but all her works - What Do People Live For, Patriot Game, Dandelion - have garnered both critical acclaim and numerous awards at various independent film festivals, gaining recognition for both artistic quality and her minority viewpoint.

A story of a rag-and-bone lady who longs for a home for her own; a moving portrait of an ordinary Indian dealing with the odds.

Reema has a diploma in film direction and a MA in theatre. She has made three documentaries and directed several short films and plays.

2) That Paradise Will Be Mine / The Netherlands / 2005 / 54min / Merel Beernink / Various
A frank portrayal of what it means to be a Dutch Muslim, this eye-opening film follows the lives of three women dealing with the consequences of their choice to convert to Islam.

Merel finished Theatre School and after seven years directing plays she turned to directing documentaries. For Dutch public broadcaster AVRO she made three series of portraits of photographers called "Hollands Zicht" (Dutch Vision). That Paradise Will Be Mine is her first feature documentary.

From road vehicles to the pedestrians, everything honks from 7am to 10pm everyday. This is a display of the rich cacophony of sounds on the roads of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.  Participated in the 12 th International Arts & Digital Cultures Festival of Gran Canaria, Spain 2006.   

Jeremy is a relatively new but enthusiastic filmmaker who has made 2 short films and various videos, including "A wake" which was shown at the 6th Asian Film Symposium. He is currently in pre-production for his short film called "A Singapore Girl story".

2) The Journey of Vaan Nguyen / Israel / 2005 / 84min / Duki Dror / Hebrew & Vietnamese
Vaan Nguyen, an Israeli-born Vietnamese, accounts her journey to Vietnam with her father to reclaim their confiscated lands. He was one of the boat-people who fled Vietnam after the fall of Saigon in 1975 and found asylum in the Land of the Jews.

Born in Tel Aviv, educated at UCLA and Columbia College in Chicago, Dror has been examining Israeli society, disassembling it with powerful stories triggered by cultural and ethnic dilemmas. Among his recent award-winning and critically acclaimed films are "Raging Dove" and "Mr Cortison, Happy Days" which had a wide international distribution.

Searching high and low in Jogjakarta, Indonesia, the filmmakers hope to find the popular Indon rock band "Sheila on 7"... Participated in Jarkarta Sling Short Fest 2006.

Zan is the principal of Fat Bidin Media, providing services in directing, producing, etc. He has been involved with several television productions for clients in Malaysia.

2) Surviving Beijing / Malaysia / 2005 / 85min / Lam Li / Mandarin
Dedicated to the label Huang Ho, pioneers of Malaysian Chinese independent music, the documentary traces the group's famous trip to China to find international recognition only to return disillusioned.

The documentary has taken part in several film festivals in Taiwan, including "Urban Nomad Film Festival 2006", "Shooting Left Asia Film Festival 2006" and "Spring Scream Music Festival 2006". The documentary make its way back to China last year, through a series of nationwide screenings organized by the band "Miserable Faith" and independent film producer, Sun Zhi Qiang.
